Job search can be such a difficult time, and at the same time, you have to be upbeat, positive and self-confident. Here is a simple technique (and cameo appearance by ZK!) you can do anywhere in just a few seconds.
Do it before making those important phone calls, going in to an important networking meeting or starting an interview.

So just what is a brand statement? Does it matter or is it just a “flavor of the day” concept?

I know, since I’ve been a job seeker myself quite often (!), it’s tempting to just start talking when you’re lucky enough to get someone on the phone. But consider stopping long enough to ask these two questions rather than launch into a sales pitch about why you’re THE candidate they’ve been longing for.

Help! People are referring me to other people. What is the best way to get those meetings or calls set up?
When someone is suggesting you meet someone they know, it’s important for a couple of reasons to ask just a few questions.
What is the reason you think I should meet Harry?
Can you tell me a little about Harry?
How do you know Harry?
What is the best way to get on Harry’s calendar?
Can I tell Harry you suggested I meet him?

What if people suggest I attend a meeting or meet someone and I really don’t want to?
I don’t want to offend anyone but…
Here’s how to handle these sometimes unwanted suggestions without offending or turning off the person who is trying to help you. And while not obligating yourself to attend meetings you have no interest in or meet people who aren’t even remotely likely to be able to help your job search.

The hidden job market isn’t really all that hidden. Networking (on line and off line) opens the door wide to all those jobs you wouldn’t hear about otherwise. It opened that door for my last 4 jobs. Will an elevator speech help?
Not if you want to stand out. Here’s what will make all the difference. And the good news is you don’t have to spend any more time trying to write an elevator speech.

To get better leads from your networking efforts, be sure you answer these two questions for everyone you’re networking with–even if they don’t specifically ask! And interestingly, being specific will actually get you better results.
